The New York-based Harlem Quartet was formed in 2006 by Cuban-born violinist Ilmar Lopez Gavilán to promote diversity in classical music. Its members include Lopez Gavilán, African-American violinist Melissa White, Puerto Rican violist Jaime Amador and cellist Felix Umansky.
Its repertoire includes not only standard classical repertoire for string quartets, but also jazz, Latin and contemporary music. It works to actively engage younger audiences and musicians in order to expand the reach of its music.
Its current tour, Los Hermanos/The Brothers Reunited, brings the ensemble together with Ilmar’s brother, pianist/composer Aldo López-Gavilán. The first half features all five musicians in Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-Flat Major; the second half offers a series of compositions by Aldo López-Gavilán.
They’ll perform at the University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall for the Tuesday Musical Association. Tickets start at $19.
