This weekend, Ensemble Theatre will present the 5th Episode of its In Our Own Words: Our Stories, Our Voices series, which was started by Ensemble’s Executive Artistic Director Celeste Cosentino and actor/director Nicole Sumlin during the COVID pandemic in 2020. Like many pandemic-driven creative ideas, it’s taken on a post-pandemic life. Its focus is “short plays on big themes —the theme being the Black experience. This year’s episodes include MILK by Amira Danan and Recipes on Used Napkins by Avery Lamar Pope. The former revolves around a young Black girl who finds that her mother’s positivity and encouragement are in conflict with the larger community’s views. In the latter a brother and sister leave their childhood home but take their memories with them.
Instead of its usual space at John Carroll University, the company will explore at new location: Slavic Village’s Darl Center for the Arts, rapidly becoming a prime destination for off-the-wall arts events in Cleveland.
