Poet Ray McNiece Leads a Haiku Hike

Sat 1/8 @ 10AM-noon

Ray McNiece is probably Cleveland’s busiest and most diversely experienced poet. Currently poet laureate of Cleveland Heights —again — he’s performed with musicians and ensembles, published 11 books, taught poetry to all ages, promoted and hosted performance poetry events, hosted and won haiku poetry contests, toured internationally and, this past year, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cleveland Arts Prize. And he’s still achieving!

This year, he’s hosting a series of quarterly Haiku Hikes to expose writers to nature in different seasons and get them thinking about how to write about it.

“These customs cultivate a seasonal awareness that improves one’s powers of poetic and natural observation,” says Heights Art, which is promoting the walks.

They start with an introduction to haiku followed by four stops to observe and write, and ending with a sharing of the work created. All walks will be in the Cleveland Heights area; this one meets at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. Each session is $20 or $15 for Heights Arts members. Bring a notebook and something to write with. Register here.
