Once Again, Prosperity Social Club Celebrates the End of Prohibition

Sun 12/5 @ 10:30AM-11PM

In 1919 the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified and went into effect the following January, driven by the activism of groups such as the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League. Unlike the 19thAmendment, which gave women the right to vote, this amendment to ban the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in the entire U.S. wasn’t popular and it wasn’t successful. It created a network of stills and speakeasies, provided organized crime with a healthy revenue stream from bootlegging, and did nothing to stop the 20s from roaring. It was repealed by the 21st Amendment on December 5, 1933.

While Prosperity Social Club in Tremont doesn’t go quite that far back (it opened in 1938), it’s has established a tradition of celebrating the end of the alcohol ban with a day and evening of Prohibition-era food and cocktails, such as the Golden Dawn, the Mary Pickford, the Toronto, the Tipperary, the Sidecar and the Bobby Burns. Old-fashioned food specials include Chicken a la King and Pork Schnitzel.

It all starts with Sunday brunch and continues through dinnertime (10:30am-9pm) with the bar open from 10:30am-11pm. The staff will be dressed in ’20s attire and guests are welcome to do the same. Reservations aren’t required but they’re a good idea.
