Tour Reveals Secrets of Akron Civic Theatre

Tue 2/11 @ noon

The Akron Civic Theatre is one of northeast Ohio’s true jewels, as anyone knows whose jaw has dropped as they walked in the front doors and found themselves in the lavish Moorish-style lobby with its sculptures, grand staircase and intricate decorations. Inside, the ornate balconies and a domed ceiling replicating a night-time sky with stars and floating clouds continue the sense of astonishment. The halls are feature more statues; even the drinking fountains are works of art.

Built in 1929 as a movie theater, it’s also hosted countless concerts by artists such as Louis Armstrong, Devo, Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello and the Akron Symphony, among hundreds of others. At one point in the ’90s, there was talk of demolishing this civic treasure. Instead it was renovated in the early 2000s and remains an active center for concerts, theater productions, benefits and high school graduations.

If you’d like to get a good look at the theater and learn more about its background and history, it hosts periodic tours, scheduled at noon so if you work in downtown Akron, you can o it on your lunch hour. If not, take the day off. It’s well worth it!.

The tour is free, but you need to register: call 330-535-3179 to make a reservation.
