Akron Art Museum Launches Winter Concert Series

Thu 1/9 @ 7PM

The Akron Art Museum has hosted its outdoor summer concert series Downtown @ Dusk for 35 years, an effort to bring people to downtown Akron back when it was virtually a ghost town.

Thing are starting to pick up now. The museum has a new building and a new outdoor space where it now hosts Downtown @ Dusk, the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden. Now it’s decided to bring present music to liven up the dark days of midwinter (indoors of course) with its Midwinter Blues and Other Tunes series.

Starting Thu 1/9 and continuing every Thursday through 2/13, the series features a variety of popular local bands, with art-making activities, including a graffiti wall, artist demos, and musical performances in the galleries at 5:30, preceding the concert in the auditorium at 7.

“We want to brighten everyone’s January and February with great music and unforgettable events in an incredibly cool venue,” says AAM deputy director/Chief Experience Officer Seema Rao. “We’re planning surprises in the galleries and in the lobby for visitors to enjoy and see the museum in a new way.”

Surf rock trio the Beyonderers kick things off on Thu 1/9 undaunted by the fact that there’s no surf in Cleveland — or Akron. The Cory Grinder Band follows in Thu 1/16 with alt country band Shivering Timbers on Thu 1/25 and Floco Torres on Thu 1/30.

The gallery and lobby events are free; admission to the concert in the auditorium is $10 in advance, $12 at the door, or $36 for all four January concerts.
