For those who love to immerse themselves in local art but find 78th Street Studios’ Third Fridays a bit overwhelming, the artists in the building have come up with a new monthly event, launched in February, called Watch It Wednesday.
It’s a more relaxed evening, where artists (including some visiting artists from outside the building) tote their projects down to the first floor event room where they work while chatting with visitors about their projects. In March, resident artists such as painter Hillary Gent, nature artist Susie Frazier and sculptor Charmaine Spencer worked alongside visitors such as painter Eva Wolf and sculptor/installation artist Brenda Stumpf. There were open doors at some of the studios and galleries lining the first floor, with Eileen Dorsey working on a landscape, Dawn Tekler mixing wax and pigment for her signature encaustics and E11even2 gallery giving visitors the chance to see their mix of mostly pop-culture inspired art.
