70s Cleveland Band Granicus Rides Again at the Grog Shop

Thu 7/6 @ 9PM

Rock music history is littered with bands who become “cult” items primarily because of their obscurity. In some cases, they are lost treasures, unjustly overlooked. In other cases, they just got lost because they were among legions of bands doing similar things as well or better.

In which category was Cleveland’s short-lived Granicus? You’ll have the chance to decide for yourself when the long-gone band opens for Corky Laing’s Mountain at the Grog Shop. Together for only a couple of years in the early ’70s, the band released a self-titled album on RCA in 1973, famous locally for its track “Cleveland, Ohio” in which the band dissed Cleveland. With few gigs and only one seasoned member — vocalist Woody Leffel — the band couldn’t build any momentum when the label, typically, failed to promote the album.

The new version includes Leffel and drummer Joe Battaglia from the original band, along with some new members. Tickets are $15.
