Akron Art Museum Photo Show Looks at Family Relationships

The Akron Art Museum once again reaches into the rich lode of its photography collection to create a thematic show in which works by different photographers offer a range of viewpoints on a single subject.

This one’s called Family. It includes a variety of definitions of “family,” and explores not just the relationships between the subjects but also the photographer and the subjects, examining what constitutes a “family” and how those relationships impact us.

“Photographs for Family were selected within an expansive definition, seeking to stimulate conversations about the intentions of the artists and the individual perspectives each visitor brings to the exhibition,” says chief curator Janice Driesbach.

The show includes work by such noted artists as Carrie Mae Weems, Diane Arbus, Harry Callahan, Walker Evans, Helen Levitt and Mary Ellen Mark.
