There’s something about the languid, almost sleepy, cadences of reggae that appeals to spiritually minded white hippie types like singer/songwriter/guitarist Trevor Hall. The 28-year-old musician released his first record 11 years ago (he signed with Geffen while still in high school), and since then he has been traveling the world, acquiring new influences particularly from Indian religious, spiritual and musical practice.
His latest EP, Unpack Your Memories, came out in March featuring five tunes from his “vault.”
“Some just didn’t make the other albums and some were just too intimate to share at the time,” he explains in his press release accompanying the album. “Now they are ready to breathe and be shared with others. I am reaching into my bag and unpacking them — unpacking their meaning, the memory of where I was when I wrote them, and the feelings that they brought me so many years ago.”
“It is my hope that listeners will feel the simplicity and intimacy of the environment that these songs were created in,” he adds. “They came from a pure space and bring back beautiful memories of my life for me. Music can be used as a form of medicine, and sharing the music that comes through me with others has been a very profound mode of healing. Maybe these songs will inspire all of us to unpack our memories and harvest the lessons embedded within them, gifted to us by the Great Spirit.”
He’ll be performing two nights at the Music Box Supper Club, with young Hawaiian roots reggae artist Mike Love (most emphatically NOT the obnoxious Beach Boy) opening.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $22 at the door.
