Jazz saxophone player/composer Stephen Philip Harvey is a Philadelphia-based musician who leads four bands there: SPH+2, Sphinx, the Stephen Philip Harvey Octet, and the Stephen Philip Harvey Jazz Orchestra, to capture the range of his interests which include jazz-based improvisation, contemporary Black music and storytelling.
It’s the Stephen Philip Harvey Octet he’s bringing to Cleveland’s BOP STOP to present his new original suite, Mythos, which was commissioned by Chamber Music America as part of 2025’s New Jazz Works. It was written for such a mid-sized ensemble which performs new works based on mythology from the African continent and spread through the African diaspora, and American Black folklore. It precedes next year’s release of the group’s second studio album, The Pen Is Mighter, next February, a project inspired by Black literature. Learn more about Harvey’s extensive, multi-facteed work HERE.
