It’s become a tradition for Cleveland’s industrial/metal/prog/goth/electronic band Mushroomhead to emerge from hiding each year for a Halloween show at the Agora, a tradition dating back nearly 20 years. It’s a good for the band, n w in its fourth decade, whose dark, macabre visuals — costumes, masks, props and stage sets — reflect the spirit of the season. In fact, the masks were an accident: the band members were trying to hide their identities so as not to detract from the “serious” bands they were in in 1993. But their theatricality proved to be as popular with fans as their metal-based hybrid sound, by turns aggressive and broodingly moody.
Typically, the show features at four or five other bands. This year there is a co-header: L.A. industrial metal band Fear Factory, which had a run of hit albums in the 90s, starting with their 1992 hit album Soul of a New Machine, and seemed to be on every other metal bill you saw during that decade as well as countless Ozzfests. There are three opening bands: Cleveland’s Bittersweet Revenge returning from last year, Mongolian folk metal band Nine Treasures and Ohio-based band the Jotunn.
