Long-Lost Baptist Generals to Play Mahall’s

Thu 6/13 @ 8PM

The Baptist Generals, which revolves around the lovelorn songwriting and eccentric personality of Chris Flemmons, came together in the late 90s in the musical hotbed of Denton, Texas north of Dallas (That’s thanks to the University of North Texas’s noted music program.)

Its low-fi folk/rock, which mixes acoustic instruments with electronics, is the sort of thing indie-rock hipsters adore — oblique, morose, distracted, a tad twee in spots. But the band’s had problems producing enough of it to gain momentum. (It didn’t help that Flemmons spent several years producing a music festival in Denton).

But last month it released its first full-length album in ten years, Jackleg Devotional to the Heart, on Sub Pop. That should raise the band’s profile considerably.

It’s also on tour, another reason more people will be paying attention. It’ll be at Mahall’s this week with the Moxies and Flowers in Flames opening.

Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door.
