Welcome

01.09-01.16.13
Welcome

Let’s be sure to make the newcomers feel welcome. And by that we mean anyone who hasn’t been there before. In other words, we’re all newcomers somewhere.

Like Cle’s newest hotspots for creativity, Artistic Muse Gallery and Cleveland Print Room, both launching this weekend. Or Zach Bruell hosting Restaurant Week at his 5 eateries. Or Matt Fish’s new radio show on 87.7. Or even the revival of PechaKucha, swing dancing and folk music. Pick just about any cool event that we’ve curated below. Show up and meet someone new. Then give them a great big welcome. –Thomas Mulready

VIDEO: Mike Nock of Blackstone LaunchPad @ B-W University
“These are tools they can use for their whole lives.”

John Baldwin invented a lathe to cut slabs of sandstone into grindstones, so the history of Baldwin-Wallace University is not new to entrepreneurship.

But with everyone from music students to liberal arts majors encouraged to think of themselves as business people and impresarios, the culture at this university has taken a huge leap forward, first with the Center for Innovation and Growth, and now with the kickoff of a new entrepreneurship program.

Blackstone LaunchPad’s founding director Mike Nock, who started his own successful investment newsletter at age 25, talks with Cool Cleveland about how economic development and student development are intertwined at B-W. It’s so embedded that over 80% of the students in the LaunchPad program are non-business majors. BW.edu

VIDEO: Michael Ruby Dives Into Tri-C
“It’s never too late to learn.”

Michael Ruby was a scuba diving instructor on Lake Erie, and found it interesting exploring some of the 1600 shipwrecks underwater. Then he decided to go back to Tri-C to get some education. “I went through an accelerated mid-life crisis. I was 37 years old and I thought, why not now? It’s never too late to learn.”

Michael is also a veteran and took advantage of the VREP (Veterans Re-Entry Education Program) to take college credit on the government’s dime. Now he’s planning on taking a 2-year Associates degree in Information Technology. “There’s a huge demand right now.”

He’s enjoying a Tri-C Alumni & Friends event at a tailgate party before a recent Cleveland Browns game. “I look forward to future events.” Tri-C.edu/alumni

Cleveland is everywhere. It’s in our personality, our work ethic, our optimism, and our pessimism.

It’s also in Culebra, Puerto Rico — an archipelago 17 miles east of its mainland, nearly 2,000 miles away from the Forest City.

State Representative (and former Cleveland City Councilman) Bill Patmon is arguably one of the more talented and brighter men to ever roam the corridors of City Hall.

However, when he lost his Council seat back in 2001, in spite of his talent and experience, he never got a return phone call as he sought out some position in the private, quasi-public, media or governmental sector…

There were many ironies and more than a few disgusting examples of cowardness in City Council’s vote to reinstate one of its members who choose to retire to pad his wallet.

Ken Johnson didn’t want to lose his full paycheck. He also wanted his full retirement pension. Greed demanded action…

MANSFIELD: Django Unchained Excuse me but the majority of the citizens of this country now are not descendants of the slaveholders. The great immigration influx from 1890 or so until the early 20th century destroyed that argument for all time. Are there still racists? Yes? However you demonstrate clearly the ultimate brainwashing that the democrat party has employed against black people in this country…
Read the comment from Mike Crognale here

Oh for heaven’s sake, Mansfield. I have no “guilt” about the peculiar institution whatsoever. I never owned any slaves. I have no ancestors who did. I’m sure you know, BTW, that the Europeans did not go down to Africa and catch slaves…

Excellent read on the film. I interpreted the movie to be one that explored the brazen brutality that existed during these times of civil discord and blatant lack of humanity for those of color. Unfortunately, many people in modern society lack the foresight and intellectual ability to seek greater understanding of the long standing impact of oppression…

As usual your comments are “right on.” I hope something might come from them. Maybe not, but keep trying. Sooner or later, (probably later) the effect will be felt. I believe in truth and truth will ALWAYS win in the end….
Read the comment from Jack McGuane here

The film is disheartening on so many levels I often can’t figure out where to begin. I was very offended as a Black woman watching the film because I saw a film aimed to make a complete mockery out of my people’s history, race, culture and overall existence as human beings. I don’t know what’s worse, the actual film or the fact that most of my peers (Blacks) are praising the director and the film…
