Anastasia Pantsios (now editor of CoolCleveland.com) came to Cleveland to earn her master’s degree in theater, planning to become a lighting designer. But her career path went in a different direction when she started taking her camera to rock concerts in the ’70s just as the Cleveland music scene was exploding, and a must-stop for every artist at every level of their career. She parlayed that access and her arts background into a career as the premiere Cleveland-based music photographer, whose images were distributed worldwide.
Now some of those images will be on view at BAYarts in a show titled Moments in the Spotlight, covering the superstars of the ’70s and ’80s, such as Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, David Bowie, Prince and Pat Benatar, as well as some of the women musicians in the Cleveland music scene today. It will also include photos she’s chosen by three photographers shooting music in Cleveland today — Joe Kleon, Denyce Renee and Judie Vegh. It opens with a free public reception Sat 4/19 @ 6-9pm. Hitler decided that art had to reflect a “German” purity and that the innovative art movements of the early 20th century reflected a “Jewish” spirit showcased in a degenerate art exhibit his propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels called “a house of horrors.” Work by some of those artists—Picasso, Kandinsky, Chagall, Albers—is in museums all over the world today. Now she’s left the organization in other capable hands as she moves on to the Cleveland Public Library where she’ll be fundraising manager and work on bringing new audiences to the library and selling merch from local makers and nonprofits to support it — and them.
