If you let it

Even Hitler knew that art has power. When they come after you, you know you’re getting to them. So stand up and push back. Don’t miss Degenerate! at the Maltz before it closes on Sunday. Sing some karaoke at the Happy Dog to benefit the good work of Preterm reproductive services. Show up in costume for the 19th edition of Kent’s Who’s Your Mama Earth Day Block Party. Join the volunteer crew and walk through the Cleveland Cultural Gardens and clean up Doan Brook watershed after a long and trashy winter.Even without all the organized activism, art changes lives and transforms our community. Congratulate CoolCleveland editor Anastasia Pantsios on her career-spanning exhibit of music superstars of the 70s & 80s at BAYarts. Party in the middle of Detroit Ave for the 15th year in a row for Dyngus Day with live polka music and pierogis. Visit painter Eileen Dorsey for a flower-themed show in her studio space at 78th Street Studios. Celebrate Akron’s Bicentennial with the world premiere of a new piece by Tuesday Musical. Experience the work of two dozen local artists at the Cleveland Botanical Garden showing how nature and art can help us deal with difficult emotions. It’s time to heal.

 PHOTOGRAPHY

Anastasia Pantsios (now editor of CoolCleveland.com) came to Cleveland to earn her master’s degree in theater, planning to become a lighting designer. But her career path went in a different direction when she started taking her camera to rock concerts in the ’70s just as the Cleveland music scene was exploding, and a must-stop for every artist at every level of their career. She parlayed that access and her arts background into a career as the premiere Cleveland-based music photographer, whose images were distributed worldwide.

Now some of those images will be on view at BAYarts in a show titled Moments in the Spotlight, covering the superstars of the ’70s and ’80s, such as Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, David Bowie, Prince and Pat Benatar, as well as some of the women musicians in the Cleveland music scene today. It will also include photos she’s chosen by three photographers shooting music in Cleveland today — Joe Kleon, Denyce Renee and Judie Vegh. It opens with a free public reception Sat 4/19 @ 6-9pmRead more.

 ART HISTORY

The Maltz Museum’s special exhibit Degenerate! Hitler’s War on Modern Art looks at a past era that has many similarities to the attacks on arts and culture happening in the U.S. today. That’s why it’s worth rushing over to the museum to catch the show before it closes Sunday April 20 and reflect on where such attacks can lead when people don’t stand up to them.

Maybe art isn’t being destroyed in the U.S. (yet) as it was when the Nazis took power and spirited away thousands of works of art, many of them destroyed or vanished forever. Hitler decided that art had to reflect a “German” purity and that the innovative art movements of the early 20th century reflected a “Jewish” spirit showcased in a degenerate art exhibit his propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels called “a house of horrors.” Work by some of those artists—Picasso, Kandinsky, Chagall, Albers—is in museums all over the world today. Read more.
