Isata Kanneh-Mason is a young (29 years old) British classical pianist whose career is on the rise. She’s played with major British and European orchestras and was artist-in-residence at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra during its 2022-23 season. She’s already released five albums including one with her brother, 26-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. In fact, she and her six siblings, performing as the Kanneh-Masons, have become something of a phenomenon in the home country, all playing piano, violin and cello, despite their parents not being professional musicians —they were a business executive and university professor, although both were talented amateur musicians.
When Kanneh-Mason, currently on tour in the U.S., performs a solo recital at Severance music Center, her program will include two Beethoven sonatas, No. 14 (“Moonlight”) and No. 21 (“Waldstein”) Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, and two pieces by 46-year-old British-Bulgarian Dobrinka Tabakova, Nocturne and Halo.
