One of many little towns along Lake Erie’s shores, Vermilion in Lorain and Erie counties, along the Vermilion River, depends on the water for its livelihood, attracting visitors for boating, fishing and other recreational activities. That led it to create its Festival of the Fish in 1966, a tradition that continues to this day, with roots in its longtime dependence on the fishing industry.
It takes place for three days every Father’s Day weekend, attracting thousands of visitors to enjoy local food and vendors, arts & crafts, and special activities of all kinds, such as sandcastle building contest and a dog costume contest, fireworks at dusk on Friday, the Crazy Craft Regatta Race lighted boat parade on Saturday and a Father’s Day parade at noon on Sunday.
