Ohio has had its share of breakout hip hop artists including Cleveland’s Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Kid Cudi and Machine Gun Kelly, as well as a host of successful second-tier aspirants. The Ohio Hip Hop Awards, hosting their 20-year anniversary dinner at the Music Box Supper Club this week, honors those who have laid the groundwork, those who have been successful and those who are hoping to be. It’s a place where performers mingle with media personalities and the entrepreneurs who drive the business side of the music. The dinner offers them a chance to interact and make new connections. It’s also a fundraiser for a pair of youth nonprofit organizations: Krayzie Bone’s Spread the Love Foundation, and Johnny O’s Nerve DJ Institute.
The event will feature awards in such categories Album of the Year, Collaboration of the Year, Artist of the Year, Producer of the Year, and more, including Lifetime Achievement Awards, honoring the genre’s pathbreakers.
The event has been around. In previous years, it’s been at COSI in Columbus, the Agora Ballroom, the Galleria in Cleveland and Playhouse Square’s State Theatre..
