For going on 50 years, Near West Theatre has been providing a type of theater that’s unique in this area, staging musical with casts of all ages, all races, all socio-economic backgrounds, all gender and sexual identities, all abilities and all levels of theater talent and experience. To do so, it frequently stages musicals with very large casts, something its move ten years ago into its own state-of-the-art home in Gordon Square has enabled it to do more effectively.

This weekend, it’ll be presenting a show called Road to 50: Celebrating the Songs That Shaped Us. This series of shows will feature numbers by the composers whose music it’s shared with its audiences, performed by the theater’s alumni.  They’ll kick it off with songs by one of modern musical theater’s mainstays: Stephen Sondheim. It will draw on shows it’s previously performed including West Side Story (1990 & 2008), Into The Woods (1997 & 2011), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2000 & 2009), Anyone Can Whistle (2004 & 2018), Merrily We Roll Along (2006) & Assassins (2016).
