The bears are back! That’s right: after 150 years, black bears are dipping their paws back into Ohio. While their habitat extends across the country, they haven’t been seen in this neck of the woods as Ohio has become urbanized and industrialized and the heavily wooded areas they prefer have disappeared. Hunting didn’t help either and by the 1850s they were rarely spotted outside of a few sightings in southern Ohio. And the 150-to-400 pound omnivores typically avoid people, mostly active at dawn and dusk. They don’t want to run into you any more than you want to run into them.

There chief naturalist John Kolar will fill visitors up with all the information they want to know about black bears, Ohio’s largest mammal. No registration is required for this free all-ages event, which is stroller and wheelchair accessible.
