The nonprofit ENCORE Chamber Music Institute was founded in 2015 by violinist Jinjoo Cho, a frequent performer on local stages, to present the ENCORE Summer Academy to give pre-professional classical musicians from around the globe the chance to train with internationally noted musicians, and to present a series of public concerts and community performances in Northeast Ohio, featuring world-class chamber musicians and performing artists; paired with community outreach performances throughout Northeast Ohio. This year’s theme is “Home.”
The public concerts launch with an outdoor celebration called “My Home Is a Thousand Places,” at the Grove in Mayfield Village on Friday June 5. ENCORE’s artist/teacher string ensemble will perform music from international folk and musical traditions: Edward Elgar, Samuel Barber, Philip Glass, Nikos Skalkottas, Reena Esmail, Grażyna Bacewicz,Erberk Eryılmaz and others. It’s a family-friendly evening that will include food trucks onsite. Admission is free.
The next night Cho will host “Jinjoo’s Carte Blanche: Fantasies of Aino Sibelius” at the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls. Aino Sibelius was the wife of composer Jean Sibelius and the program was inspired by a visit Cho made to their home in Finland. It includes Jörg Widmann’s solo violin études, Sibelius’ Five Pieces for Violin and Piano, and Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night). Tickets are $20. Go here to get them.
Future concerts take place on Friday June 12; Saturday June 13; and Saturday June 20 at various locations. Go here for a full schedule.
