Cleveland Museum of Art Opens Major Show of Work by Influential Sculptor Martin Puryear

It’s an exciting time at the Cleveland Museum of Art. They just opened one special exhibition, Manet and Morisot, visually depicting the entwined careers of two important late 19th century French painter. This week another major special exhibition opens across the hall, a comprehensive show of the work of sculptor Martin Puryear, organized jointly by CMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with close collaboration from the artist. It’s the most significant show of work by the influential artist in a couple of decades.

Martin Puryear: Nexus follows the artist from his early 1960s work, exploring how his use of form, materials and process evolved. It looks at his influences including the natural world, African American history and material culture traditions from around the world. It includes both new and iconic works, along with prints, drawing and other documentation of outdoor commissions he has created globally.
