Chamberfest Cleveland launches its 14th season this week with more than two weeks of programming around this year’s theme “Continental Drifts.” Its emphasis here is on how music crosses borders with difference influences from around the globe impacting musicians and composers.
“This year’s festival brings together music shaped by European traditions, Eastern mysticism, and American experimentalism, revealing the exchanges of influence that connect composers across distance and time,” the festival’s artistic directors Franklin Cohen, Diana Cohen and Roman Rabinovich share. “Through iconic repertoire, overlooked voices, and contemporary masterpieces, we will discover how composers share their homeland through their sound, how tradition transforms through cultural contact, and how identity can both anchor and evolve.”
The festival launches on Wednesday June 10 with “Global Fanfare,” taking place at the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Kulas Auditorium and featuring drumming by djembe player Weedie Braimah on a program that includes music by Steve Reich, Yang Baoshi, Miguel de Aguila, Matthew Hindson and Johannes Brahms. The concert is preceded by a welcome from festival executive director Jessica Aherwood followed by an opening night reception.
For the next two weeks, programs will take place not only at CIM’s Kulas and Mixon halls, but also at Dunham Tavern, University Circle’s Harkness Chapel, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Federated Church in Chagrin Falls, a dozen programs in all, featuring 37 musicians over the course of the event.
