Brass and Wind Quintets Join Forces for Latin-Leaning Concert in Akron

Tue 2/10 @ 7:30PM

Two of the country’s finest chamber ensembles join forces for Tuesday Musical Association’s next concert at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall, combining the tonal textures of their two different sets of instruments. The Boston Brass, together since 1986, brings the diverse brightness of two trumpets, trombone, tuba and horn, while Imani Winds, also a quintet and a decade younger, cushions it in flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and French horn.

Both ensembles are known for their devotion to presenting newly composed additions to their repertoire, and they’ll be bringing something special to this tour: music by Cuban-American trumpet player/composer Arturo Sandoval that they jointly commissioned. In addition, their program features music by J.S. Bach, Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, jazz musicians Paquito D’Rivera (another Cuban-American) and Argentinian-American pianist Lalo Shifrin, among others, giving the program a strong Latin orientation.
