Apollo's Fire's Baroque Bistro Celebrates a Peaceful Jerusalem of the Past

Sat 3/28 @ 6:45PM

Sun 3/29 @ 12:30PM

Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s Baroque chamber orchestra, brings its full array of musicians to its regular season shows, taking place at more formal venues such as churches, synagogues, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. But they also have performances called Baroque Bistros, where smaller groups of players perform in more casual settings.

They’ve got two such performances coming up that are more intimate versions of their upcoming “O JERUSALEM!: Crossroads of Three Faith” concerts. At Baklava Bash, performed at Akron’s BLU Jazz+ on Saturday and the Music Box Supper Club on Sunday, they’ll share ancient songs and stories of Jerusalem, taking the audience back in time to when different faiths lived relatively peaceably in that city — what a dream, eh? The concert is a tour of the four quarters of the Old City, with the ancient tradition of Hakawati or Middle Eastern storytelling, illuminating the music. Performers include oud player Ronnie Malley sharing stories of his Palestinian elders; Israeli-American musician Daphna Mor playing the ney, a woodwind instrument; hammered dulcimer expert Tina Bergmann; and other Apollo’s Fire members on cello and percussion.
