Recently the Shore Cultural Centre in Euclid announced the exceptionally good news that it has hired Terrence Spivey as its new artistic associate to take its arts programs, especially in theater, to the next level. Spivey came to Cleveland a little more than a decade ago to be artistic director at Karamu, where he revived its once-fabled theater program and brought new voices and new faces to Cleveland stages.
When he was let go by Karamu last year in a budget-cutting move, many were concerned he would leave Cleveland behind. But offers of freelance work poured in, and in the year — only a year? — since his departure, he’s helmed half a dozen productions. His appointment at the Shore Cultural Centre gives him an artistic base.
Find out his thoughts on the local arts and what he might have in mind for the Shore Cultural Centre when it presents a Community Engagement Panel on the Arts with Spivey with Terrence Spivey, hosted by WEWS’s Leon Bibb. Also on board will be former politician, now an actor and playwright, Peter Lawson Jones, one of the people whom Spivey lured into the theater; Shore Cultural Centre’s executive director Laura Kidder and director of programming Chris Cipriani, Euclid mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail, Euclid councilpersons Taneika Hill and Daryl Langman, and Rich Lea, Shore Cultural Centre Corp. board president.
