Initiative

10.02-10.09.24

Be the first

I once worked at a very large CLE-based corporation that insisted on waiting to implement anything new. “We don’t want to be the first, and we don’t want to be the last,” I was told. But as we’ve learned, everyone wants to be first. So even if you are are a hustleholic, you’d be lucky to come in 2nd, 3rd or maybe somewhere mediocre. But if you’re not even trying to take the initiative, you’re going to end up an afterthought. So sometimes it feels like our Midwestern chill doesn’t serve us very well in the 21st century.Don’t let that happen to you. Join the dance party this weekend to welcome Haley Himiko Hudson Morris and Cassie Trainer as they launch Paradise Galleria, their new vintage mall at 39th & Lorain. And congratulate WJCU’s inaugural Hall of Fame class as they celebrate their 55th anniversary as one of the best college radio stations anywhere.

And there’s so much innovation right at your fingertips. Members of the Akron Symphony Chorus will back you up for Broadway Karaoke at Jilly’s Music Room. Stan Hywet hosts a 4-day Ohio Mart with 150 local makers. Les Délices kicks off the new season with a delightful dose of Mozart. Seven women try to save a hapless President from disaster in the Cleveland premiere of the farce POTUS at Dobama. Accordionistas Maura Rogers and the Bellows entertain at the Riverdog Barn. The legendary (and for good reason) punk band the Rubber City Rebels play a “final” concert in Akron.

There’s Afghan music at Oberlin, abstract art in Rocky River, a fairyland at Shaker Lakes, a Sunrise Silent Disco in Gordon Square, and the first day of early voting next Tuesday. Read former judge and CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen’s Connally’s think piece on why it’s essential to spread the word about voting YES on Issue 1 to ban gerrymandering. You need to take the initiative now.

Journey out west as she shares the stories of some of her favorite dinosaurs in the collection. She’ll also introduce you to her research in molecular taphonomy—the study of the processes of fossilization—and discuss how some of the techniques she uses can help solve ancient mysteries.  ELECTIONS

“I’ve seen Sherrod Brown in action. He never stops,” says CoolCleveland columnist Claudia Taller. “I saw him in action on a flight from Cleveland to Washington, DC. Prior to boarding, it was hard to miss his energy as he navigated his way through people waiting for their flight. As he spoke on the telephone just a few feet away from me, I saw his face intent and focused. It seemed like everyone knew he was there, and as he talked on his phone, he reached out to shake our hands.”

She points out what many of us know: Sherrod is a civil servant who knows his job is to listen to what people want and fight to get it done. On his website, read how he stands up for labor and seniors and strives to keep us safe. Learn how he puts Ohio first and stands up to special interests. See how he fights for rural Ohioans, veterans, and soldiers. Know how he protects our access to health care, women’s reproductive rights, and equal rights. Sure, call him a “career politician” but his career has been focused on serving Ohioans. Read more.

POINT OF ORDER

 C. ELLEN CONNALLY

The concept of one person/one vote is basic to our democracy. Whether you live on East 55th or West 65th, Eastlake or Westlake, your vote should have the power to elect a person to Congress or the state legislature who reflects the voice of your community. But that’s not currently the case in Ohio. Politicians who draw the district boundaries often use a system known as gerrymandering so that rather than the voter picking the politician, the politician picks the voters.

That’s why it is so important to vote YES on Issue 1 on the November ballot. The proposed constitutional amendment removes elected officials from drawing congressional and state legislative districts. Issue 1 has broad bipartisan support. Former Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court Maureen O’Conner — a Republican — has been the face of the Vote Yes on Issue 1 campaign and joins with Democrats and other Republicans from around the state to promote its passage. Read more.
