The internationally acclaimed Imani Winds doesn’t look like many other chamber ensembles, with its quintet of musicians including three black women, a black man and a white man. Its repertoire is as unexpected as its membership, bridging classical music, jazz, and even folk and pop from American, European, African and Latin-American traditions. It’s a group that just by existing and playing its music defies the Trump era by embracing all the human possibilities inherent in music.
The ensemble will be performing at E.J Thomas Hall for Akron’s Tuesday Musical Association, where it will perform music by Elliott Carter, Paquito D’Rivera, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Simon Shaheen and their own members, Valerie Coleman and Jeff Scott.
