Over the decades and centuries thousands of ships have sunk in the Great Lakes, with estimates ranging from 6,000 to 25,000 — the most famous being the 1975 sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior, which begat the annoying Gordon Lightfoot song with about 25,000 verses. Many have never been found, accumulating on the sea floor like sunken treasure.
Learn more at an “archaeology and shipwrecks” program at the Westlake Porter Public Library. There Carrie Sowden, who is the archaeological director of the National Museum of the Great Lakes, will talk about how ship hunters go about locating and exploring these shipwrecks, highlighting Lake Erie shipwrecks. Sowden will also explain the science of behind archaeology and the importance of preserving these ships in order to learn from them.
