When faced with systemic dysfunction, the most progressive approach may be to rethink the basic design. Redlining and blockbusting in real estate and lending have resulted in racial wealth disparities, so the exhibition Undesign the Redline at Trinity Cathedral should shed some light.

Tis the season for helping each other, and Carlos Jones’ Black Friday Charity Ball will benefit three local charities addressing dementia, youth behavioral issues and social justice. French native Lili Roquelin certainly redesigned her life, moved to Cleveland, relocated to NYC and returns to Brothers to Be Inspired, while jazz/pop/fun/soul vocalist Conya Doss alights at Nighttown. And the plan comes into focus: Winterblast launches at Akron’s Lock 3, Loganberry Books celebrates their 25th, we discover new models of journalism at a City Club forum, and Dru Christine Fabrics & Design hosts a pop-up shop and fashion show for Small Business Saturday.

Design your own celebration of David Bowie in January with the Bowie Bargain Badge, good for one admission to any or all of our 7 events during David Bowie Month, ranging from a birthday bash to a benefit to a complete survey of the artist’s life. Design away. –Thomas Mulready

When you look at the long history of racist housing patterns and their impact on social and economic conditions, it makes a mockery of those who demand that African-Americans just need to work harder and expect more. Banks, real estate companies and government policies imposed conditions that blocked home ownership and created racial wealth disparities.

The interactive exhibit Undesign the Redline has been on view at various Cleveland venues and is now at Trinity Cathedral’s gallery, showing how practices such as redlining and blockbusting impacted neighborhoods and their residents. A panel of local nonprofit experts, community activists and others will share their stories and shed even more light on structural discrimination at the gallery tonight. Wed 12/4.

Back in the early 00s, a singer/songwriter fresh from Southern France alit in Cleveland, and the next thing we knew, she was fronting a heavy metal band with the very metal name of Hate Dies Hard. It wasn’t a natural fit for Lili Roquelin but she had left her native country to do music and had heard Cleveland was a great music town. And she was – and is – willing to give anything a shot.

After four years here, she moved on to NYC in 2007, but she left behind a lot of friends and fans. So she comes back periodically to share what she’s working on, such as her latest effort, Be Inspired. She’s still game to try anything. She’ll be at Brothers Wine Bar Fri 11/29.

From January 3 through January 17, we are presenting 7 events celebrating the life, music and legacy of David Bowie. Now you can catch all 7 events for one low price with the Bowie Bargain Badge. And just in time for the holidays.

All the shows are included in the Badge; from the Big Bowie Birthday Bash at Brothers on Bowie’s birthday on Wed 1/8 (zeroing in on his Ziggy Stardust era); to the Bowie Benefit for BOP STOP on Sat 1/11 (an all-request night); to the three consecutive Fridays we present A Friday Night With(out) David Bowie (covering his entire life); to the two Sundays we offer Brunch With Bowie (uncovering his overlooked later years). Design your own schedule: come to one, come to a few, come to them all. Your Bowie Bargain Badge gets you in the door for everything.

No two shows will be exactly identical, and fun surprises are planned throughout the month. And each show features a live music set by Vanity Crash with Bowie favorites slammed up against their own sizzling originals. The Bowie Bargain Badge is perfect gift for that David Bowie fan in your life. Even if that fan is you. BowieShows.com. [photo of Bowie in Cleveland 1978 by Janet Macoska]

Larry Koval manages the reggae-based Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band, one of the area’s most popular acts. They’re one of the biggest draws at summertime outdoor events and festivals. But what to do in the winter? With his events promotion company, Music America, Koval’s looking to create special events and new experiences to attract new fans.

Events such as the Black Friday Charity Ball at the Red Space Fri 11/29 are very much in keeping with Jones’ longtime involvement with charitable causes. The event, with the P.L.U.S. Band headlining, will raise money for three local charities which address dementia, youth behavioral issues and social justice. Good works and good times go well together.
