Sometimes you have to do that. The burning feels good. And the smoke looks cool.

James Levin and the folks at the FireFish Festival in Lorain know this. Check out the performers and art installations in the abandoned storefronts along Broadway in downtown Lorain this weekend. Then they set the giant fish on fire sculpture in the Black River, while you can burn your negative energy at the same time. Cleveland’s Sustainability 2019 project looks to next year when we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River fire.

The Cleveland Urban Film Festival will be flickering at the Breen Center, the Apple Festival lands in Elyria, and Negative Space marks a year since their move. We celebrate The Beatles with a closer look at their Revolver album on Fri 9/21 and The White Album on Sat 9/22. Whatever lights your fire. –Thomas Mulready

Dive Deep on The Beatles’ Revolver and The White Album

The Revolver album is now considered by many to be The Beatles’ best record. We’ll make a good case for that with a track-by-track exploration of the entire LP, along the way visiting Abbey Road studios where they invented ADT (Automated Double Tracking), experimented with LSD, and recruited a double string quartet for Eleanor Rigby. On Fri 9/21.

The Beatles (known as The White Album) is considered the finest double album ever recorded. A rare demo has surfaced with nascent versions of 19 of the 30 songs on The White Album, plus a few that didn’t. We’ll follow the Beatles on their trek to India with the Maharishi and Mia Farrow (including an exclusive interview with her sister Prudence), all the way through the blistering avant-garde multi-track session that resulted in Revolution 9, the album track Revolution 1, and the sizzling single Revolution. You’ll hear the backstories, and you might even learn something when CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready dives deep on Revolver on Fri 9/21 and The White Album on Sat 9/22.

While the races for governor and senator are the high-profile ones on the November 6 ballot, the race for Ohio secretary of state is equally important. This is the office that oversees elections, and its current occupant Jon Husted has worked hard to put obstacles in the way of voters who tend to vote for Democrats.

Without fair elections that make the ballot equally accessible to all valid voters, policies made by officeholders won’t reflect the greatest good for the most people. That’s why it’s essential that we elect Democrat Kathleen Clyde, who is committed to expanding voting opportunities and making sure that race, age, gender, place of residence and socioeconomic status don’t create barriers to voting.

The Growth of a Nation

The feelings of Jewish people around the world toward Israel are complicated. Certainly there’s pride that this, the first Jewish nation in modern history, created one of the world’s most prosperous countries virtually out of whole cloth. That’s the Israel celebrated in the Maltz Museum’s new exhibit, Israel: Then & Now, which opens this week and remans on view through 5/19/19.

The museum’s managing director David Schafer promises, “It’s learning about Israel and its people, its diversity, its culture, its innovations, its ideas. It’s the closest thing than getting on a plane and going to Israel. Overall, it’s a multi-sensory engagement of a fascinating and special country.” Sun 9/23.

Setting Lorain on Fire

James Levin is known for founding events and organizations that seek to activate underused, forgotten spaces. Most famously, he fueled Gordon Square’s revival with Cleveland Public Theatre. In the past few years, he’s been doing the same for downtown Lorain with the FireFish Festival.

This arts fest presents performers and art installations in some of Lorain’s abandoned storefronts and other deserted spaces to lead people to discover them. It culminates with the burning of a giant fish sculpture alongside the Black River – and this year, says Levin, people will be invited to burn their negative energy along with it. Fri 9/21-Sat 9/22.

VIDEO: Explore the Multidimensional IngenuityFest Future/Past

IngenuityFest is back with a blast from the future/past. This year’s theme celebrates innovation and technology throughout history and looking forward to what has yet to come. Hundreds of artists, musicians, makers, performers and volunteers been working around the clock to create an immersive environment at the Hamilton Collaborative.

IngenuityFest features performances by musical acts Dressy Bessy, Squonk Opera, Mourning [A] BLKstar, Obnox and more across its five stages with a headlining performance by hip-hop soul duo OSHUN. In addition there will be dance performances, featuring MorrisonDance, variety shows, puppet shows, burlesque, and all sorts of performances, music, art and dance. IngenuityFest runs from Fri 9/28 through Sun 9/30 at the Hamilton Collaborative.

Start ‘Em Young

When the Akron art Museum says it has programs for all ages, believe it. It’s “Art Babes: Drivers on a Roll” opens its galleries to babies (and their caregivers) up to 12 months to soak in art they probably don’t understand yet while playing simple games, engaging in sensory play and listening to music. She may not be Picasso yet, but you can give her a head start! Thu 9/20.

* Many kids are fascinated with science fiction. They can learn the tricks to writing their own at a workshop conducted by local writer Charlotte Morgan at MOCA Cleveland, sponsored by Lake Erie Ink. Sat 9/22.

Seventeen years ago, when he was 19, Kevin Hines tried to commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Now he’s the center of the film Suicide: The Ripple Effect, which aims to prevent others from taking the same path. It has a one-time screening at the Capitol Theatre.

For the FRONT Triennial, New York-based artist Nichlas Buffon created drawings of iconic LGBTQ locations in both New York and Akron – which he had never visited. Hell be at the museum to talk abut his work and interact with members of the organizations and businesses he depicted.

The Woollybear Festival in Vermilion is a uniquely northeast Ohio event. Founded by longtime weatherman Dick Goddard, the theme is provided by the namesake caterpillars – you’ll find folks dressed up as them for the opening parade.
