Stomp

09.27-10.04.23

Take a stand
This week, you can stand for positive change in your community in so many ways. You can help kick off the most important music census in our region in over a decade. You can ignore the lies and help someone get to the polls on November 7 to VOTE YES on Issue 1.Stomp some grapes at Chateau Hough, put your foot down against censorship at CPL, stroll the Coventry Village Street Festival, kick open the 23/24 season at the Maltz PAC with Cleveland’s Russian Duo, run away with Love in Exile at CMA, take a load off at the Chagrin Documentary Film Fest, or hightail it out to the Riverdog Barn for Akron’s rising alt-country stars The Shootouts.

We take a step forward when we dream of tomorrow while remembering yesterday. Check out our theater reviews from the past week, a look at the dedication of the Jesse Owens Plaza, and two massive PHOTOSTREAMS & VIDEOS of last weekend’s brilliant Ingenuity Fest. I’m personally so proud of the board, staff and volunteers for rising from the ashes of the pandemic to bring together an inspired (and inspiring) community of artists celebrating creativity, innovation and foot-stomping fun. Year after year, Ingenuity, like its hometown, is still squelching expectations.

 HUMAN RIGHTS

Lies and Damned Lies

How desperate are Ohio Republicans to abolish reproductive rights? Let us count the ways!

Knowing that a reproductive rights amendment would be on the November ballot, they scheduled an August special election in which they begged voters to say yes to making constitutional amendments harder to pass. After that failed, they turned their attention to other ways of sabotaging it.

As in August, they numbered the November 7 amendment Issue 1, hoping to confuse you: this time you have to vote yes instead of no to protect reproductive rights. They tweaked the ballot language to reflect an anti-choice position instead of putting the original petition language on the ballot and they omitted much of what the issue does. (Protect the right to contraception, for instance.)  And they rolled out the lies. If you hear anyone say it would allow the abortion of a healthy baby at nine months just it’s being born, please roll your eyes.  Read more

Ingenuity Was All That

The theme of this year’s IngenuityFest, which took place at its sprawling four-story space at the Hamilton Collaborative Fri 09/22-Sun 09/24, was “Biologies and Geologies,” a theme expressed in exploding volcanos, climbing foliage and much more.

Throughout the building and out on the campus, there were areas to explore, things to do and performances to watch on six stages and tucked inside various nooks and crannies. There were displays of fire accompanied by Tesla Orchestra’s lightning-spewing coils; there were acrobats and hula hoopers, and a roller rink and bumper cars you could try yourself. The Dream Destination featured fantastical installations, many of them interactive. There were also loads of local makers showing off their wares for sale in the Maker’s Mecca and area organizations sharing information about their offering in the Ideation Station. And if things got too much for the littlest people (the event attracted every age and type of person) there was the chill Family Village to get away from it all.

CoolCleveland’s Anastasia Pantsios, and Thomas Mulready, co-founder of Ingenuity, documented the happenings on video & photos. View the PHOTOSTREAMS & VIDEOS here.
