Boundary-Crossing Trio Love in Exile Plays at Cleveland Museum of Art

Wed 10/4 @ 7:30PM

Love in Exile is a trio whose music doesn’t fit comfortably into the usual categories into which we sort music.

Pakistan-American vocalist Arooj Aftab, who sings in her native Urdu, spans jazz, modern classical, minimalism, folk, pop and traditional Hindustani music. Pianist Vijay Iyer, an American of Tamil heritage, brings together classical music and jazz, while multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, an American of Pakistani heritage, was a sideman for Lou Reed and has played for other adventurous musicians such as Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, Beth Orton and Damien Rice, sliding across genre boundaries to focus on the potential of sound. All three are composers.

As Love in Exile, they bring together their vast experience, skills and interests to create exploratory soundscapes that sit outside categories. The Grog shop is bringing them to town for a concert, which takes place at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium.
