As part of its2023 #CLEReads Young Adult Book Fest, the downtown branch of the Cleveland Public Library is hosting Stories Unbound: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, focusing on a timely subject: those who have stood up to censorship and attempts to silence certain narratives. It brings together a diverse group of both local and national award-winning writers
They include Angela Davis, Quartez Harris, Leah Johnson, Torrey Maldonado, Rasheed Newson, Maulik Pancholy, Justin Reynolds and others. Multiple panels and forums will take place covering topics such as “Words on Trial: Examining Book Bans and the Impact on Young Readers,” “Literacy for All: Fighting for Equal Access to the Power of Reading,” “United Against Censorship: Taking Action Against Book Banning” and “Whose Story Is It? Issues of Ownership and Creative Control (when others try to dictate public access).”
There’s a break for lunch before the concluding event at 12:30pm, a panel called “Intellectual FREADOM: Examining Censorship and Access to Information,” featuring Angela Davis, Rasheed Newson, and Leah Johnson, moderated by Erica Marks, in the Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium, followed by a book signing in the Eastman Reading Garden.
