Zoom Talk Focuses on Why Ohio Taxpayers Are Bailing Out Dated Coal Plants

Wed 6/16 @ 3-4PM

Despite a major corruption scandal that included the FBI arrest nearly a year ago of Ohio Speaker of the House Larry Householder for allegedly masterminding a $60 million scheme to pass HB 6 to bail out coal and nuclear plants, Householder, while stripped of his speakership, still sits in the legislature. And that same legislature is dragging its feet about repealing HB 6, which not only props up unprofitable nuclear plants and bails out obsolete coal plants — one of them in Indiana — at Ohio taxpayer expense, it made Ohio the first state in the country to walk back on its green energy standards. And the legislature is currently trying to erect roadblocks  to solar and wind energy development, dragging down Ohio’s economy and dragging the state even more into the past.

Join good government group Ohio Citizen Action on Zoom for “It’s Past Time to Repeal Ohio’s HB 6 Coal Bailout” (no kidding!). Rachael Belz, OCA executive director, will be joined by special guest Neil Waggoner, senior campaign representative for the Sierra Club.

“Our ongoing fight for renewable energy and government accountability in the face of Ohio’s HB 6 scandal has reached a new phase,” OCA tells us. “That law, at the center of Ohio’s largest racketeering and bribery scheme ever, forced taxpayers to bail out FirstEnergy’s nuclear plants and two Eisenhower-era Ohio Valley Electric Corporation (OVEC) coal plants (one of which is in Indiana!). The nuclear bailout portion of HB 6 was just repealed, but the coal bailouts continue to roll in — and Ohio’s ratepayers and environment continue to foot the large bill.
