Top Area Funk, R&B & Jazz Musicians Perform Concert in Cleveland Heights

Mon 10/23 @ 6:30PM

Local R&B/hop hop performer/composer Minor Prophet Joél and bassist Walter Barnes Jr. have put together an event they’re calling FunkNParables, featuring original music by the northeast Ohio musicians, on the bill, along with funk classics.

Opening the show is Akron jazz trumpet player Tommy Lehman, who has created a strong presence in the area jazz scene in the past deade. He’ll perform with his current quartet: drummer Gabe Jones, bassist Smokeface and keyboard player Andru Senpai, the ensemble that played on his 2022 release Uplift.

Clevelander Barnes has toured with countless pop and R&B artists, starting in 1999. Since then he’s been on the road with Christina Aguilera, Musiq Soulchild, Angela Bofill, Pieces of a Dream and numerous gospel artists. He currently plays with Toni Braxton and Babyface. We’re told to “expect funk, funk, and more funk” from him.

Joél is a trained classical vocalist who sang with the Morehouse College Glee Club and Quartet & provided background vocals for Beyoncé’s The Fighting Temptations soundtrack. He’s Outreach Coordinator for Tri-C JazzFest and Performing Arts. At this show, he’ll be celebrating the release of his new album featuring 11 original songs.

The show takes place at the Disciples Christian Church Cultural Arts Center in Cleveland Heights. Go here for more information and tickets.
