The Numbers Band (15-60-75) now in its 56th year, is a northeast Ohio institution for good reason. Led by guitarist/vocalist/ frontman Robert Kidney, the Kent-based band arrived early at its unique blend of rock, blue and jazz marked by Kidney’s frenetic vocals and passionate delivery. They’re known as one of the most gripping live bands around even if Kidney’s energetic stage performances have slowed a bit with age — but just a bit. He’s back by longtime core members, sax/keyboard player Terry Hynde and his multi-instrumentalist brother jack Kidney, along with bassist Bill Watson and drummer Clint Alguire, although many members have passed through the band in its long history.
While other bands have pursued fame and record labels the Numbers Band has built a faithful cult following, aided at one point by the support of Pere Ubu leader David Thomas. Their unusual sound and career is fertile material for a documentary and so one was made. It’s called Out of Obscurity, Into Oblivion: A Film About the Numbers Band, and it was made by Kent music historian/writer Jason Prufer, author of Small Town, Big Music, about the Kent music scene.
