This week, The Cleveland Orchestra winds up its in-town “Summers at Severance” concert series for people who don’t want to drive out to Blossom Music Center.
The soon-to-retire-after-a-quarter-century Music Director of the orchestra Franz Welser-Möst will be on the podium leading the musicians in a three-piece program of Germanic music (OK, one of the composers is from Austria, but still …) kicking off with Richard Wagner’s Prelude to Act 1 of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg which debuted in 1868, and which, despite its ungodly length (well over four hours) and lack of ancient Norse/Germanic gods, is my favorite opera.
That’s followed by Intensity by 49-year-old Austrian composer Bernd Richard Deutsch. The evening concludes with Richard Strauss’s Symphonia domestica, an orchestral tone poem dedicated to family life, which debuted in 1904.
