Cleveland Folk Group New Long Road Plays Tribute to the Year 1966 at Cain Park

Thu 8/20 @ 8PM

A little more than 15 years ago, a quintet called Long Road, featuring veteran Ohio folk musicians, was playing around the area, offering an eclectic repertoire that reached back to the ’60s folk revival, when young musicians were rediscovering genres such as blues, bluegrass, traditional folk and other indigenous American musical form, and adding some psychedelic rock, rockabilly, pop and jazz.

After that group ran out of steam, one of its leaders, Cleveland Heights guitarist/vocalist/songwriter David Budin, revived the concept with New Long Road. It includes one of the other former members, Celtic harpist/guitarist/vocalist/banjo player Celia Hollander Lewis, plus three new recruits: another 50-year veteran of the area music scene, vocalist Robin Stratton; cellist Jeffrey Singler; and flutist Sarah Lambert.

This week they’re returning to Cain Park’s Alma Theater to perform a show called “California Dreamin’: A 1966 Folk-Rock Concert.” They’ll perform their own distinctive arrangements of songs from the year (almost certainly including the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’”, probably not including the Troggs’ “Wild Thing,” along with Budin’s wry historical narrative, telling stories about the musicians who made the songs famous.
