This weekend, the greater Akron area celebrates what Italians gave brought to this country when they became Americans, honoring the culture at the 76th annual Summit County Italian-American Festival.
The event takes place at Lock 3 in downtown Akron over two days, starting with the gates opening at 11am each day, although there’s an official “opening” ceremony at 8pm Friday. All day there’ll be live music (mostly cover and tribute bands), and food, food, food. And bring the kids on Saturday because from 4-8pm, it’s Famiglia Fun Night. There’ll be attractions such as train rides, stilt walkers, the Carnevale stage show, the Lil’ Pisa Dance Party, balloon art, and that big favorite of kids everywhere: face painting. At the same time, at 4:30, there’s a Catholic Mass in the lobby of the Akron Civic Theatre for the religiously inclined.
The whole thing wraps up with fireworks at 10pm on Saturday. Admission is free.
