From Memorial Day to Labor Day, Sunday afternoons are Reggae Sunday at the Music Box Supper Club in the Flats. The doors between the downstairs supper club space and the boardwalk are thrown open for a tropical summer party fueled by the easygoing grooves of reggae music. The band performs inside where dancers gyrate by the stage and outside, people languish by the river sipping island-inspired cocktails from the outdoor Tiki bar. The menu for these Sundays features jerk chicken and other Jamaican-flavored selections.
This week, reggae fans (and those who just want to soak in an outdoor tropical vibe) can enjoy the music of Akron;s Umojah Nation, who have been entertaining audiences around northeast Ohio for two decades.
The band is led by the husband-and-wife team of Stefano and Tracey Nguma. She grew up in Akron, he’s from Tanzania via Ethiopia and moved to Akron in the late ’80s.Their repertoire includes tunes by beloved traditional roots reggae artists like Bob Marley as well as dancehall reggae artists like Buju Banton, mixing the traditional and modern aspects of reggae music. Their spellbinding female singers dress in colorful Caribbean garb and dance onstage to reflect the joyful warmth of the music.
