Cleveland’s IRTF – the Inter-Religious Taskforce on Central America — is once again hosting its Social Justice Teach-In, or Liberation Lab, which it launched in 1999. It describes these annual events as “an informative and inter-generational day of community building and education for high school and college students and other community members seeking ways to take positive action for social justice.”
Its keynote speaker this year is Dr. Rima Vesely-Flad, Visting Professor of Buddhism and Black Studies at Union Theological Seminal and author of The Fire Inside: The Dharma of James Baldwin and Audre Lorde.
The day also includes several panel discussions, including “International Anti-imperialism and War Resistance,” and “Art, Joy & Resistance,” and a workshop on the Ohio Divest Campaign. The event also includes a screen printing workshop hosted by local printmaker and activist April Bleakney (whose work in seen above), where participants can get a make-and-take print of a quote from Baldwin or Lorde. There’ll also be homegrown seedings to take home and a food distro with fresh produce and shelf-stable food, as well as harm-reduction supplies such as Narcan, bandages, ointment and gauze. And they’ll have a selection of fair-trade products for those who want to do more to support farmer and artisan cooperatives in Latin America.
Tickets are just $10 but no one will be turned away for lack of funds; all attendees also get lunch. Go here for tickets; go here for full information on the schedule and sponsors. The event takes place at the Cleveland State University College of Law at 1801 Euclid Avenue.
