All sorts of great things started to happen once the Cuyahoga River was no longer a flammable cesspool, famous for its periodic fires. For instance, it’s become a recreational hub for kayakers and paddleboarders, and the Flats has become a bustling neighborhood, not a forsaken area people avoid because of the toxic smells.
And wildlife is returning to the area as well. This Saturday will mark another historic event in the revival of the river: the release of young lake sturgeon. Join naturalists and conservationists in Cuyahoga Valley National Park at the Boston Store Trailhead River Access near Boston Store as they facilitate the return of this once prolific species to a river whose water quality is now improved enough to support them.
At 9:15, conservation experts will make opening remarks, and then from 9:30-11:30am people can take turns “gentle releasing” young sturgeon into the river. See and learn about the river’s comeback firsthand. The event is family-friendly so the upcoming generation can learn and become passionate about protecting and restoring our environment.
