2,500 Athletes Expected to Compete at Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta

Sat 9/27 @ 8AM

The roots of the Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta, hosted by the Cleveland Rowing Foundation, go back to 1989, just about the time people were really waking up to the fact that the lake was swimmable and the river no longer caught on fire. Initially a small local event on the lake, it moved to the river in 1996, where it’s grown by rapidly, now attracting visitors from across the country. They say it’s now one of the top ten largest one-day regattas in the U.S.

The day is packed with races in a dizzying variety of categories of gender, age and experience: nearly 70 categories in all, with more than 2,500 racers expected to compete.

There are plenty of places for spectators to watch from, a vendors village to browse and get food from, and, for those 21 and over, a beer tent from 11am-5pm hosted by Collision Bend Brewing Company, which is also holding the post-regatta party.
