A Thursday evening isn’t going to draw the types of crowds that the Saturday Hands Off and No Kings rallies brought to Ohio City’s Market Square Park. But around a thousand people showed up with handmade signs for the Good Trouble Rally and march, honoring the late Congressman John Lewis’s urging people to get into “good trouble” of the side of justice and human rights. Organized by several local groups and tireless activists such as Cindy Dempsey and Sue Dean, the event featured a voter registration/information table (of course!) and forms to contact our U.S. Senator. Speakers included the national president of the Human Rights Campaign, Kelley Robinson, and the Democratic candidate in next year’s Secretary of State race, Cincinnati doctor Bryan Hambley, whose race may be the most important one on the ballot: that office is the one he protects voting rights, and it’s due to the conniving of its current occupant that voters voted last November to keep gerrymandering while they thought they were doing the opposite.
