On June 17 of last year, we got the heartbreaking news that artist/educator Tina Cassara at age 75 passed away a few months after suffering a traumatic head injury. She was married to filmmaker/photographer/ journalist Bruce Checefsky who writes about arts and culture for CoolCleveland.com. (Bruce shared the story of his battle to get proper care for his wife following her injury which you can read here.)
The outpouring of love, grief and sympathy from people in the arts community was massive. Tina taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art for more than 35 years, where she co-founded the sculpture + expanded media program. She was known for her distinctive textile-based work, which explored connections between language and fiber, her study of the American labor movement, the inspiration and encouragement she provided her students at CIA, her activism and idealism. A memorial event honoring her life and work was held at Praxis Fiber Workshop in the Waterloo Arts District on August 25, 2024, where friends and colleagues spoke effusively about her work and her kind spirit.
Now Checeksy and Praxis Fiber Workshop are launching the Tina Cassara Fellowship to support recent college graduates who are passionate about material exploration in textiles. An emerging artist will be awarded a 12-month studio residency at Praxis Fiber Workshop, resulting in a solo exhibition of new work. “Preference will be given to artists who demonstrate a strong commitment to conceptual and material experimentation,” they suggest. Applications are due July 1. The work period begins in September 2025, with the show in August 2026.
