Isadore String Quartet and Pianist Jeremy Denk Wrap Up Chamber Music Series

Tue 5/19 @ 7:30PM

Among string quartets, the New York City-based Isadore String quartet is a relative baby, founded in 2019 when many others are decades old. The musicians met and began to play together while they were students at New York’s Juilliard School; unsurprisingly, they’re influenced by the Julliard String Quartet, founded in 1946, and named after violinist Isadore Cohen, one of its early members. They describe their musical philosophy as “approaching the established as if it were brand new and the new as if it were firmly established.”

In their short time together, they’ve toured extensively across the U.S. and Europe performing new and standard repertoire and reaching out to new audiences, as well as collaborating with other musicians such as noted pianist Jeremy Denk, a 1990 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory who now also lives in NYC and has an international career.

When they come to Cleveland to perform for the Cleveland Chamber Music Society, the Isadore String Quartet will be joined by Denk onstage at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium. The quartet will play Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in B flat major, Op. 76, No. 4 (“Sunrise”) and György Ligeti’s String. Quartet No. 2, before Denk joins them for Johannes Brahms’ Quintet for Piano and Strings in F minor, Op. 34
