Cleveland sculptor Fred Gearhart’s work, mostly in stone, but also in wood and cast bronze, has been seen in galleries around town. He devoted himself to his passion for art fulltime after retiring as a high school history teacher, producing his work in his garage studio behind his house.
Each year on Memorial Day weekend he opens his studio and his spacious landscaped yard to visitors for his annual open studio event. He’s turned his yard into a vertiable sculpture garden with works nestled along the walkways and nestled in the plants, all available for purchase. The pieces range from small vases to giant figures suitable, but most of the 200 or so works are very affordable.
Everyone is invited to come browse, hang out, visit his studio as well as his garden, and learn about his work process. The open house, at 1609 Rydalmount Road, Cleveland Heights (a block west of Severance Center), takes place rain or shine. It’s free and open to the public.
