Pianist Jeremy Denk Returns to His Alma Mater Oberlin to Play Works by Women Composers

Thu 11/30 @ 7:30PM

American classical pianist/author Jeremy Denk is an international star who has performed with dozens of major orchestras and been awarded the so-called MacArthur “genius” grant as well as the Avery Fisher Prize.  He also writes about music for numerous publications, published a memoir and wrote an opera libretto.

This season, in addition to focusing on Bach, he’s put together a program of music by women composers from the 19th to the 21st centuries. And he’ll be returning to the place that fueled his career — he’s a 1990 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory — to perform that program.

It features works by 19th century composers Clara Schumann and Louise Farrenc, 20th century French composer Cécile Chaminade, 20th century American pianist/composer Amy Beach, 20th-century modernist/folklorist Ruth Crawford Seeger, and contemporary composers Tania León, Meredith Monk, Phyllis Chen and Missy Mazzoli, exploring the too-often-overlooked work of talented women. The program also includes pieces by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

He’ll perform at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel. Go here for tickets.
