Tom Eakin, aka Tom Dark, formed the band the Dark back in the early 1980s when punk rock was really beginning to get a toehold in northeast Ohio’s underground scene. The band featured his brother Scott Eakin on bass, the late drummer Dave Araca, a veteran of many punk groups, and guitarist/vocalist Robert Griffin, best known for Prisonshake and his indie label Scat Records. The Eakins later formed Knifedance (late 80s) and Stepsister (90s). His most recent band is Black Static Eye.
The Dark’s releases during their lifetime were limited to some compilation tracks; they broke up soon after recording an album in 1984 (They were managed by the Pagans’ surly Mike Hudson, which probably didn’t help their career while enhancing their legend.) They’re now releasing that album with some extra tracks on vinyl for the first time. Dressing the Corpse features 17 tracks recorded between 1981-84, including live tracks, demos and tapes of WRUW-FM broadcasts, with four recently rediscovered recordings. Most are brief blasts of pure punk energy, although one logs in at over five minutes.
The Tom Dark Band will celebrate the release of the new record with a show at the Beachland Tavern where they’ll be joined by Tuffed Puffins (which features veterans of the ’80s and ’90s NE Ohio punk scene), Kill the Hippies and Muzzle.
